Facial care for skin problems: What matters

As the largest organ in the human body, the skin forms an external protective shield. In this role, it fends off pathogens and acts as a barrier against injuries and harmful environmental influences. If the skin shows changes or even develops diseases, this is an indication that the body is out of balance. The causes of skin problems can be very complex. Psychological triggers such as stress are among them, but a compromised immune system is also a common factor. Skincare products containing ingredients that place excessive strain on the skin often leave their mark.

Atopic dermatitis, in particular, is a disease that has become increasingly widespread in recent times. According to estimates, the number of affected individuals worldwide has increased twofold or even threefold in the last 30 years. The exact cause of this phenomenon is not yet clearly established. However, it is known that a genetic predisposition is the main trigger. Atopic dermatitis ultimately develops due to so-called provoking factors such as certain foods or allergies, and can manifest itself in varying degrees of severity. Psoriasis, which is probably better known as "squamous psoriasis," is also genetically determined.

But what does sensitive facial skin generally mean? Its barrier function is impaired. In contrast to perfectly healthy skin, it reacts more strongly to irritants. Furthermore, the nerve fibers are more sensitive, which manifests as burning, stinging, or a feeling of tension. Redness is also present, which is usually due to inflammation. When treating these problems, only very specific products should be used. Make sure the products are free of fragrances and preservatives. This way, you avoid further irritating your already sensitive skin. At Dermaplan, we have the ideal answer: all of our facial care products are free of harmful and allergenic ingredients. Furthermore, we avoid emulsifiers, dyes, mineral oils, silicones, and polyethylene glycols (PEGs). Since they contain no animal-derived ingredients, Dermaplan cosmetics can also be used by vegans without any concerns.

Find the right care for your skin condition

The specific facial care products that are suitable depend on the condition of the skin and its characteristics. Depending on the active ingredient, they inhibit inflammation, relieve itching, or replenish lipids. There are a few simple basic rules to follow. One of them is: the drier the skin, the more lipid-rich the skincare product should be. Those who are dealing with particularly acute problems such as inflamed, sometimes oozing skin should choose a cream with a higher water content.

With Dermaplan facial care, the specific treatment focus is clear from the product name alone. Dermaplan Itch Acute Care contains a 15 percent lipid content. It is recommended for itchy, dry, and reddened skin. It is also effective after insect bites or contact with nettles, so it can be used on more than just the face. At 30 percent, the lipid content of Dermaplan Itch Eczema Care is higher. As its name suggests, this cream can generally be used for eczema accompanied by scratching. It also helps with skin allergies that cause itching, irritation, and redness. Dermaplan Itch Long-Term Care contains 42 percent lipids. This product is intended for the regular treatment of particularly dry skin that tends to become rough and chapped. It is also the ideal solution for chronically itchy, aging skin.

Dermaplan Lipid Balance 1 Cream cares for dry, very sensitive skin prone to redness. It also soothes after UV exposure. It also supports the regeneration of dry skin. It contains 15 percent lipids. Dermaplan Lipid Balance 2 essentially fulfills the same functions as Lipid Balance 1. However, because it contains twice as much lipids at 30 percent, it is even more suitable for drier skin. It contributes to maintaining a healthy, resilient skin barrier. It is generally considered basic care for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

Shaving is part of regular facial care, but it can often cause irritation on sensitive, prone skin. To counteract this, Dermaplan After Shave Balm is the preferred choice. Applied immediately after shaving—whether wet or dry—it provides the skin with the moisture it needs and soothes it. The oils it contains provide protection while preventing potential dryness. This facial care product is suitable for those with psoriasis or atopic dermatitis, as well as anyone who generally suffers from sensitive skin. This applies to all products in the Dermaplan range.

Correct procedure for facial care with Dermaplan

Less is more: This simple rule should be kept in mind when using all Dermaplan facial care products. Because the creams have excellent regenerating and protective properties, applying them sparingly is all the more important. If you use a care product to treat itching, apply it as soon as you feel it on your skin. Storing it in the refrigerator also promotes this effect. This way, you'll also benefit from a pleasant cooling effect.

Apply the Lipid Balance series products to the affected areas of skin morning and evening. Massage the cream in using circular motions. Apply the Dermaplan After Shave Balm in the same way, which is intended for use immediately after shaving.

All DERMAPLAN facial care products are available in our online shop and in your pharmacy.

FAQ Facial care

If you still have questions about facial care, please take a look at this section. We've covered the most important aspects here and answered them concisely. If you have any other concerns regarding this topic, our customer service team will be happy to help.

What facial care should I use for dry skin?

Facial care must be tailored to the condition of your skin. The drier the skin, the higher the lipid content of the skincare product should be. A cream with a high lipid content is particularly recommended during the winter months, as the protective barrier is even more prone to drying out in cold weather. For severely inflamed, weeping skin, however, a product with a higher water content is essential.

Where does atopic dermatitis occur on the face?

Atopic dermatitis can affect even babies. Skin changes then appear on the face, primarily on the cheeks and scalp. This is referred to as cradle cap. Adults may also suffer from atopic dermatitis on the face. Typical areas include the forehead, the eye region, and the area around the mouth. Intensive care is all the more important because the face is exposed to external influences year-round.

Can the face also be affected by psoriasis?

Psoriasis also occurs on the face. The typical plaques there are smaller than on other parts of the body, but their appearance is identical. Red, scaly patches can be found on the forehead, eyebrows, eyelids, cheeks, nostrils, and, in men, in the beard. Both the outer and inner areas of the ears are also known to be affected.

What properties should a care product for dry facial skin have?

Ideally, a care product for dry facial skin fulfills three essential functions. Problems such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis are often accompanied by itching. A cream should effectively relieve this. At the same time, it's important to moisturize the facial skin. This can be achieved with ingredients such as lecithin, urea, or hyaluronic acid. It's also important to balance the lipid balance. Various plant-based oils such as shea butter or avocado oil can help with this.

What is the best way to cleanse dry and sensitive facial skin?

Dry, sensitive facial skin is characterized by a compromised acid mantle. It is therefore considered particularly vulnerable and requires a mild, pH-neutral cleanser. Furthermore, the product should avoid harmful ingredients such as emulsifiers or allergens to avoid further aggravating irritation. Cleansers with moisturizing properties support facial skin's ability to retain moisture and regenerate.
