The skin of our hands: Why it needs special care

Our hands are in constant use: We need them in everyday life, at home, at work, during sports, when preparing meals, or when interacting with others. Of course, even more situations could be listed here, but they would go beyond the scope of this article. What is already clear, however, is that our hands are exposed to a wide variety of influences – some of which pose major challenges, others minor. And even the undoubtedly necessary, regular hand washing should not be underestimated. Soaps can attack the skin's protective acid mantle. Meanwhile, UV light dries out the skin and accelerates its aging process.

Another example is cold weather. Many people struggle with dry, cracked hands in winter. This is because the sebaceous glands produce less oil due to the lower temperatures. Another unfavorable factor is dry air, which draws moisture from the skin. Furthermore, the skin on our hands has special characteristics. It tends to be thinner and more sensitive in this area than elsewhere. Furthermore, it has little fatty tissue. The few sebaceous glands that exist are located on the back of the hand, so they produce hardly any oil.

Hands that are subject to heavy use often feel like paper. Fine cracks can be seen, and redness is common. Those affected also feel that their skin is tight. Burning or itching are also quite common. Even inflammation or abrasions cannot be ruled out. In the worst case, eczema can develop – a not uncommon problem. It is estimated that around one in ten of the population is affected. With the right hand care, the skin receives the moisture it needs, can rebuild its protective layer, and is soothed. Dermaplan offers the ideal products for this, which are particularly well-tolerated because they do not contain harmful or allergenic ingredients.

This is what characterizes sustainable hand care

Hand care must be tailored to the condition of the skin. The general rule is: the drier the skin, the more oily the products should be. Slight tightness or itching are signs of a lack of necessary moisture. Moisturizing creams or lotions help with regeneration. Dermaplan skin care products from the Lipid Balance series are particularly suitable for this.

However, if the hands are red, this is a sign of inflammation. This can lead to eczema or blisters. In such cases, a lower oil content in skin care is essential. Dermaplan has the right answers in its range. They reduce itching, soothe, and protect the skin. They are suitable for everything from babies' to elderly skin and are ideal for treating atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. All Dermaplan hand care products are free of any preservatives, emulsifiers, perfumes and fragrances, as well as mineral oils, silicones, and dyes. This makes them particularly well-tolerated, which is crucial for sensitive skin.

Thanks to their versatility, they also help with skin allergies accompanied by redness and itchy irritations – Dermaplan Itching Eczema Care is ideal for this. Dermaplan Itching Acute Care is particularly effective after insect bites or contact with nettles.

General tips for hand care for dry, sensitive skin

With hand care that's moisturizing and completely skin-friendly, you can lay the foundation for significantly improved skin. We'll also give you some additional tips that you can integrate into your daily routine and that will help you achieve this.

One piece of advice concerns handwashing. A change here could potentially lead to a particularly lasting effect, as we practice it countless times every day. Hot water is particularly damaging to sensitive, dry skin. Washing your hands with lukewarm water is much gentler. Conventional soaps challenge the skin and its protective acid mantle. Instead, use a product that's as gentle as possible, such as Dermaplan Wash Balance. It impresses with its moisturizing properties and contributes to skin regeneration.

When drying your hands afterward, gentle patting is preferable to the widespread rubbing, as it doesn't further irritate dry skin or exacerbate any existing redness. When out and about, avoid electronic hand dryers, which are found in many public restrooms. The dry air from the hairdryer only causes your skin to lose more moisture.

Wearing gloves is almost a no-brainer in winter, and even more important for sensitive hands. If possible, use cotton gloves, as other fabrics can cause skin irritation. It's also a good idea to wear gloves for various household tasks—cleaning, of course. They protect against dishwashing and cleaning products, which can be harsh on the skin. And as obvious as it may seem, make sure you drink plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated is good for your skin.

FAQ Hand care

They're a tool in constant use: Our hands practically only rest at night. They're in constant use throughout the day and are therefore subjected to considerable stress. Well-groomed hands are considered a beauty ideal. Here you'll find the most frequently asked questions and answers regarding hand care.

Do your hands need special care?

On the one hand, hands are in constant use and are therefore exposed to various external factors. In summer, they are primarily exposed to UV radiation and heat, while the cold of winter increases the risk of drying out. However, special care is also required due to the properties of the hands. The palms have no sebaceous glands. The backs of the hands are very thin and have very few sebaceous glands and fatty tissue. However, a protective film is present to ward off irritants and external factors as much as possible. As long as this film is not overstressed, it will fulfill this task. It benefits from regular care, which is recommended anyway due to a variety of influences.

What characteristics characterize a good hand care product?

The question of the optimal hand care product depends on several factors. Skin type and the season are two crucial aspects. On cold days, the protective barrier tends to dry out more quickly and therefore requires a higher oil content than in summer. Moisturizing properties are also important. Especially for morning use, it is desirable if the cream absorbs quickly. Particularly skin-friendly care products do not contain perfumes and fragrances, preservatives, or emulsifiers and are therefore dermatologically very well tolerated.

How do I care for my hands properly?

Hand care involves two essential steps. First, thorough cleansing is essential. Lukewarm water is preferable to hot water, as it doesn't overstress the protective barrier. A mild, pH-neutral cleaning agent is recommended. Then, pat your hands dry with a cloth. This is gentler than the usual rubbing. A moisturizing cream can then be applied.

What can I do for beautiful hands?

In addition to careful and regular cleaning and the use of a suitable moisturizer, there are other factors that contribute to a healthy-looking hand. Wearing gloves is advisable in certain situations. This is self-explanatory in winter as protection against the cold. However, it is also recommended for activities such as washing dishes or gardening. A balanced diet also plays a significant role in the appearance of the skin. In addition to fruit and vegetables, fish, legumes, and whole grain products should also be regularly included in your diet. Finally, make sure you drink plenty of fluids regularly.
