Skin cleansing

Skin cleansing is not only an integral part of the morning and evening skincare routine – it also forms the foundation for other treatments. Dry skin, skin affected by atopic dermatitis or psoriasis, in particular, presents a challenge: On the one hand, thorough cleansing is essential, but on the other, excessive irritation should be avoided. Gentle, moisturizing products are therefore particularly important. This not only cleanses the skin but also supports its regeneration. Dermaplan has developed the ideal range for this.

Cleansing sensitive skin – thoroughly but gently

Dry skin tends to become brittle and rough, which makes it easy to flake. It lacks moisture and oil. This is due to reduced activity of the sebaceous glands and a limited ability to retain water. As a result, it loses its natural elasticity, making wrinkles more likely to form. A feeling of tightness and itching are typical symptoms of very dry skin. Cracks and redness also easily form. Above all, it reacts very sensitively to various stimuli, and inflammation is a possible consequence.

People affected by neurodermatitis or psoriasis will also find this description to be more or less accurate. The skin's protective acid mantle is compromised, and it's all the more important to proceed with cleansing. This also means finding the right balance. Washing too frequently carries the risk of over-stressing the protective layer, which causes the skin to dry out even more. At the same time, cleansing shouldn't be neglected. This is the only way to remove oil and dirt particles and ultimately prepare the skin for treatment with other care products. Therefore, skin cleansing should be done morning and evening.

The face and body are exposed to a wide variety of influences throughout the day. Water alone is therefore not enough. It can only remove water-soluble substances – only a suitable cleanser can remove sebum. The components contained in such a cleanser must not irritate the skin. Furthermore, the product should be as pH-neutral as possible. Our protective cover indicates a pH value between 4 and 6.5. Skin cleansing products should also be within this range.

Well-thought-out concept with a feel-good guarantee: Dermaplan skin cleansing

Dermaplan develops its entire product range in collaboration with dermatologists. A key principle is the avoidance of harmful and allergenic ingredients. The skincare products can therefore be used for psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, as well as for skin that is generally prone to dryness. Finally, by avoiding preservatives, fragrances, and perfumes, as well as other components such as silicones, mineral oils, or PEGs (polyethylene glycols), the skin cleansers are also extremely well-tolerated and non-irritating.

Dermaplan Wash Balance can be used as a full-body wash. Upon use, you'll notice that it doesn't foam like many other skin cleansing products typically do. There's a good reason for this, and it's a sign of quality. Excessive foaming is simply a sign of a high emulsifier content. Dermaplan also omits these, which speaks volumes about the tolerability of this wash lotion. Itching and skin irritation are thus ruled out. However, the lack of foaming in no way affects the cleansing effect.

Shaving places particular demands on the skin, as each time we shave, we remove a small layer of dead skin from the surface. This causes micro-injuries and compromises the skin's protective acid mantle. Balanced skin regenerates itself without difficulty. Dry skin or skin affected by atopic dermatitis or psoriasis needs support in this process. Dermaplan Tonic After Shave is recommended as a gently cooling facial toner after shaving. The sage extract it contains has an antibacterial effect, while aloe vera moisturizes, soothes, nourishes, and supports the skin's regeneration.

And because every skin type requires cleansing products tailored to its specific needs, Dermaplan Tonic is available in various versions. The basic version is designed for normal and combination skin. Tonic Clear was developed for oily skin and skin prone to blemishes. Fruit acid is one of the key ingredients here. It counteracts bacterial growth and removes the upper stratum corneum. Dermaplan offers the perfect facial toner for sensitive, dry skin with Tonic Sensitive. Urea, panthenol, and allantoin work together to strengthen the affected skin. They also moisturize and effectively reduce redness.

What else should you pay attention to when cleansing your skin?

When cleansing your skin, other factors play a role besides the frequency and type of cleansing agent used. Water quality, for example, is a crucial, often underestimated, factor. A high degree of hardness is considered unfavorable, especially for patients with atopic dermatitis, as it increases the risk of irritation. The degree of hardness is influenced by the content of magnesium and calcium compounds.

And while we're on the subject of water: Too high a temperature is also harmful to the skin. It attacks the upper layers of the skin. Especially in cases of atopic dermatitis or psoriasis, it is advisable to cleanse the skin with lukewarm water. This not only protects it but also relieves itching and leads to a reduction in inflammatory reactions. Cloths or sponges should be used with caution, as they can cause irritation and damage through rubbing. For the same reason, patting is preferable to the widely used rubbing with a towel. Stressed skin requires additional care after cleansing. Therefore, apply a moisturizing cream or lotion afterward.

FAQ Skin cleansing

Skin care is important, no question. However, you should never skip the second step. This means thorough cleansing is essential. Dirt and dead particles must be removed regularly. However, it's especially important to proceed with caution if you have dry skin or problems such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Here, we answer the most frequently asked questions about skin cleansing.

Is it enough to use water to cleanse the skin?

Water alone can also cleanse the skin, but it only removes water-soluble substances. It's not sufficient for thorough cleansing because it can't remove sebum, in particular. This is precisely what is necessary, as this skin oil causes problems when it binds to bacteria. Therefore, it is always recommended to use a cleanser such as a face wash or toner. For dry, sensitive skin, this product should be as mild as possible so it doesn't damage the barrier.

How often is skin cleansing recommended?

A general recommendation for how often you should cleanse your skin cannot be given, as the answer depends on your individual skin type. However, the following principle is helpful: Regularly, yes, but not too often. Washing too often puts excessive strain on the skin's protective layer and deprives it of essential oils. People who have to deal with problems like psoriasis or atopic dermatitis, or who generally suffer from dry skin, should therefore be particularly careful. Cleansing your skin in the morning and evening is perfectly sufficient.

What should you consider when cleansing dry skin?

The foundation for cleansing dry skin is a mild product that, if possible, contains no harmful ingredients such as perfumes and fragrances, emulsifiers, or preservatives. These would only further challenge the already compromised barrier. A cleanser with moisturizing and replenishing properties supports the regeneration of the imbalanced protective layer. Washing should be kept as brief as possible, and the water temperature should ideally not exceed 36 degrees Celsius. When drying with a towel afterwards, patting is a gentler option than rubbing.

How do I cleanse my skin if I have neurodermatitis or psoriasis?

Skin affected by psoriasis or atopic dermatitis is extremely sensitive. It tends to become brittle or cracked very quickly. Another common symptom is intense itching. The product used to cleanse the skin must be dermatologically compatible and free of ingredients that could irritate the weakened barrier. Soothing, moisturizing products with lipid-replenishing properties are the first choice.
