Body care

Very dry skin, or skin affected by atopic dermatitis or psoriasis, tends to be more permeable than usual. This makes it significantly more sensitive to external stimuli and frequently itches. Unfortunately, this often creates a vicious cycle: Those affected begin to scratch, further damaging their protective barrier. Therefore, intensive body care is required that provides moisture, has a soothing effect, and avoids any irritants that would only unnecessarily stress the body. Dermaplan's product range meets precisely these needs – from basic care to aftershave and body lotion.

The right body care for dry and sensitive skin

Although these are two different disease patterns, they do have similarities. People affected by psoriasis or atopic dermatitis are familiar with this: Their skin often dries out very quickly. It also reacts more sensitively to external factors and is prone to redness. In the worst case, it develops eczema and causes unpleasant itching. And even those who generally suffer from dry skin can probably relate to at least some of the problems described.

The body's protective shield, which is also its largest organ, becomes more permeable due to a lack of moisture and fat. This finding marks the beginning of a stressful causal chain. It results in an increasingly deteriorating skin condition. Furthermore, since the stratum corneum cannot fully fulfill its protective function, harmful substances are considered even more dangerous. They penetrate the body more easily and may lead to skin irritations or inflammatory reactions. As a further consequence, moisture levels decrease again, further increasing vulnerability.

With the right body care, this vicious cycle can be effectively prevented or counteracted. This requires products that are as gentle as possible and easily absorbed by the skin. Dermaplan developed its range in collaboration with dermatologists and fully meets these criteria. It contains no preservatives, emulsifiers, perfumes, fragrances, silicones, dyes, mineral oils, or polyethylene glycols (PEGs). Furthermore, Dermaplan body care is completely free of animal ingredients, making it vegan.

Feel good all around with Dermaplan body care

Especially with dry skin, shaving can be a huge challenge, both on the face and other parts of the body. Removing hair makes the surface even more irritated and prone to irritation. While particularly gentle shaving systems or blades can be used, some skin damage still occurs. After all, approximately 0.1 millimeters of the upper stratum corneum is removed each time.

Sufficiently moist skin regenerates itself quickly. However, if it's sensitive, it may dry out even more or react with the formation of pimples or spots. A burning sensation can be a further consequence. But even with a healthy protective layer, sensitive reactions can never be ruled out. One of the causes is a razor that isn't cleaned thoroughly enough.

Dermaplan's After Shave Balm provides the perfect solution. It soothes the skin after shaving and provides the care it needs. The valuable oils it contains sustainably prevent dryness and provide the necessary moisture. Dermaplan After Shave Balm is generally recommended for people with dry skin, as well as for anyone specifically suffering from atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. After shaving, apply a thin layer of the quickly absorbed balm using circular motions.

Dermaplan Body Lotion is intended as general protection for dry skin. It can be used in a variety of ways: Those exposed to harmful environmental influences, strong sunlight, or extreme climatic conditions benefit from its care effects, as do those affected by psoriasis or atopic dermatitis. Dermaplan Body Lotion is also useful after frequent showering or simply as a rejuvenating treatment after the stresses of everyday life. It is also suitable for preventative care and can be used all year round. As with all Dermaplan skincare products, sparing use is sufficient. Ideally, apply the body lotion morning and evening.

Dermaplan Lipid Balance is a great way to maintain healthy skin. It also demonstrates its strengths as a basic body care product for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. It can be used equally well on dry, stressed, and rough skin. It can be considered a standard body care product that replenishes fat and provides optimal moisture. Precisely because of these properties, it also proves soothing after sunburn. Like the body lotion, apply this Dermaplan body care product in a thin layer morning and evening.

General care tips for affected skin

Especially in cases of dry skin and in cases of atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, there is often still uncertainty as to whether bathing is preferable to showering or vice versa. When it comes to personal hygiene, occasional bathing is definitely recommended. This has the advantage of gently removing bacterially contaminated skin cells. However, especially with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, it is important to proceed in moderation. Showering or bathing once a day should generally be sufficient. Too frequent bathing will only dry out the skin further.

The water temperature should not be too hot, but rather lukewarm. Occasional bathing is generally worth considering, not least because of its relaxing effect. It can have a positive psychological effect – which, after all, is also an important component in skin problems. Using a body wash with a moisturizing effect, which promotes regeneration, has also proven effective. Dermaplan has the right products for this in its range. After washing – whether showering or bathing – patting your skin dry with a towel is particularly gentle on the skin. Unlike normal rubbing, it is less stressful on the sensitive surface.

And since shaving is also an important part of personal care, we'll cover it in more detail at the end. A frequently asked question in this context is: wet or dry? Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Especially when the skin lacks moisture, the dry method is usually the better solution. While it can't quite keep up with a wet shave in terms of thoroughness, it is gentler. The blade doesn't come into direct contact with the skin. This also reduces the risk of injury.

One advantage of wet shaving is that today's blade systems adapt perfectly to the individual body shape. Since the razor glides more easily over the skin, the risk of injury is also reduced. The risk is higher if too much pressure is applied, which can easily cause cuts. If you have sensitive skin, foam and aftershaves containing alcohol are also not recommended. These cause irritation and intensify the drying process. Therefore, use the aftershave balm from the Dermaplan body care range, which promotes regeneration and soothes.

FAQ Body care

Not only for a protective barrier prone to dryness or for conditions like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis: Body care is also important for flawless skin. The associated goals are different. On the one hand, it's about counteracting a problem; on the other, maintaining health and prevention are paramount. Do you still have questions about body care? Perhaps we can answer them here in our FAQs. If you have another concern, our support team will be happy to help.

How do I properly care for irritated and sensitive skin?

Proper body care for sensitive and irritated skin begins with washing. Avoid hot water, but rather warm or lukewarm water. This protects the skin's protective barrier. At the same time, soaps should be avoided, as they attack the skin's acid mantle. This also applies to foaming cleansers, which contain emulsifiers and surfactants, which can also be harmful. Instead, a mild cleansing lotion without harmful ingredients is recommended as the first choice. When applying a cream or body lotion afterward, make sure it has a replenishing effect and moisturizes the skin.

What is important when it comes to body care for atopic dermatitis?

If your skin suffers from atopic dermatitis, intensive care is necessary. The dryness often leads to itching. This requires a product that provides moisture and soothes. Because the skin's sebum production is reduced, it lacks fats. Therefore, the cream you use should also supply the skin's own lipids by absorbing as quickly as possible and leaving no greasy residue. Irritants such as emulsifiers, perfumes, fragrances, or preservatives would only further irritate sensitive skin and should therefore be excluded from a skin care product for atopic dermatitis. It is important to regularly pay attention to the protective barrier, even during symptom-free periods.

What is proper body care for psoriasis?

When caring for skin affected by psoriasis, it is crucial that the products used do not contain any harmful or allergenic ingredients. These would only further irritate the already inflamed areas. A cream must provide moisture, as the surface is highly prone to dryness. This requires an appropriate lipid content. The amount depends on the condition of the skin. The drier the skin, the greater its need for lipids. The moisturizing properties of the care product increase the defenses of the protective barrier, and the symptom-free phases can be extended.

What else can I do for my body care besides external treatment?

Body care is much more than just external treatment. Other factors play a key role in maintaining healthy skin. For example, a lot depends on diet. Healthy fats such as vegetable oils, fish, or nuts should therefore be regularly included in your diet. Fruit and vegetables provide important nutrients and vital substances that also have a positive effect on the skin's appearance. Harmful substances such as nicotine and alcohol should also be avoided. Excessive sun exposure also puts a strain on the skin and should therefore be avoided whenever possible. Sufficient sleep gives our largest organ the opportunity to regenerate and thus appear fresher.
