With the support of a night cream, stressed skin can recover from the challenges of everyday life and regain a fresh appearance. Sleep makes you beautiful – that's by no means just a cliché. There's more truth to it than one might initially think. The importance of a good night's sleep for our skin becomes especially apparent when we don't get enough. Lack of sleep is literally written all over our faces. A pale complexion or slightly puffy eyes are typical. But why is that? If the body doesn't get enough rest, stress levels rise. The associated hormone cortisol blocks important regeneration processes.
Sleep is crucial for the body, as it is during this time that it releases growth hormones. Their function, among other things, is to form new skin cells. While we recover, numerous processes take place. Blood circulation in the skin increases, and cells are renewed. This happens up to eight times faster than during the day. Our outer protective layer also repairs minor cell damage caused by influences such as UV radiation or cold.
Furthermore, the skin produces more collagen. It gives the skin fullness and makes it pleasantly soft. This structural protein also ensures a healthy appearance of hair and nails. Sleep is also so important because we are protected from stressful factors at night. There is no polluted air, no UV radiation, and no temperature changes. This gives the skin the opportunity to recover from everyday challenges. Ultimately, it is during this time that it is especially receptive to a nourishing product that supports its processes. Therefore, using a night cream is definitely worthwhile.
The purpose of a night cream
The distinction between a day cream and a night cream might initially seem like a sales gimmick by the cosmetics industry. However, this isn't the case in this case; two separate products definitely have their place. This is because the skin also reacts differently in the morning than it does in the evening. While during the day it's more concerned with switching to protective mode and being prepared for environmental influences, during sleep it focuses on regeneration.
A night cream is designed to promote the skin's processes, thus enabling optimal recovery. Because the protective covering has a particularly strong blood flow and optimal oxygen supply, it is able to absorb the cream even better. Before applying, thorough cleansing is essential. For women, this includes removing makeup and removing any traces of makeup. Men, of course, also cleanse their faces beforehand to remove dirt particles and sebum that have accumulated during the day.
Dry skin, in particular, requires nighttime care. Its sebaceous glands secrete too little oil. This compromises the protective barrier, which impairs its function. The skin in the affected areas often feels rough, tight, has fine pores and is brittle. This can then even lead to itching, starting a cycle. Scratching further damages the barrier, making it even more vulnerable and subsequently reacting with more intense itching. In the worst case, eczema can even develop. While the face is particularly prone to dryness, other parts of the body, such as the hands and feet, elbows, shins, lower legs, or forearms, are often affected. In these cases, a night cream helps restore moisture balance and, if possible, reactivate the protective function. Of course, it also promotes regeneration processes.
Regenerating and caring: requirements for a night cream
First of all, as with any skincare product for the outer protective barrier, it's important that it's used according to the skin type. Those battling blemishes need an anti-inflammatory cream that regulates sebum production. Meanwhile, people with dry skin need products with moisturizing and regenerating properties. These are typically composed of three different types of ingredients. This also applies to Dermaplan's night creams.
Various substances, including plant oils and fatty acids, provide moisture and thus have a soothing effect. Dermaplan's Lipid Balance contains ingredients such as coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, and shea butter. They protect the barrier and smooth it at the same time. Regenerating ingredients, in particular, optimize the connection between the skin cells. In doing so, they help strengthen the protective layer. Dermaplan uses, among other substances, phytosterols, which, due to their positive properties, are also suitable for use in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
Antioxidants are designed to reduce skin damage caused by external influences and free radicals. In doing so, they also reduce inflammation in the form of itching or redness. Vitamin E acetate is an example of such an ingredient. It is made from plant oils. All Dermaplan skin care products – including night creams – are free of any allergenic or harmful ingredients. All additives such as fragrances, perfumes, emulsifiers, and preservatives are excluded. This makes them extremely skin-friendly and can also be used to treat atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. The night creams differ in their lipid content. The drier the skin, the higher the lipid content should be. Since they are very effective, a thin application before going to bed is sufficient.
All DERMAPLAN night cream / night care products are available in our online shop and in your pharmacy.
Around-the-clock skin care: The counterpart to day cream is night cream. In our FAQ section below, we answer, among other things, why these products exist and what specific benefits they provide. You'll also find other frequently asked questions about night creams and their corresponding answers.
Why are there special creams for night?
The body behaves differently at night than during the day. During sleep, it recovers, and so does the skin. Growth hormones are released, which are also responsible for the formation of new skin cells. This renewal process occurs up to eight times faster than when we are active. At night, the skin's surface receives better blood flow, is more permeable, and the pores dilate. A night cream serves to support the skin's regeneration and thus achieve optimal performance. It therefore serves a different purpose than a day cream, which is primarily focused on protecting the skin.
What should you consider when using a night cream?
Before applying a night cream, cleansing is the first step. Women also remove their makeup. Generally, thorough washing frees the skin of dirt particles, preventing inflammation from any impurities. The facial toner or wash lotion should be tailored to the specific skin type. Dry skin, for example, requires a mild product that doesn't strip it of oils and moisture. Afterward, the surface is ready to absorb the product, and the night cream can be applied. Like the cleanser, it too must be tailored to the skin's needs.
What should a night cream for dry skin contain?
Essentially, a night cream should contain three types of ingredients. One group is antioxidants. Their job is to reduce damage such as inflammation. Dry skin is often irritated and generally more sensitive. It therefore needs soothing components such as plant oils that counteract moisture loss. Finally, regenerating substances such as hyaluronic acid are important, as they support the development of the skin's natural protective barrier.
Who is a night cream suitable for?
A night cream is suitable for everyone. There are products for all skin types, including dry, oily, sensitive, and normal skin. There is also a distinction between creams for women and men. While women's skin is generally thinner, men's skin is more prone to blemishes. Skincare products are tailored to each skin type.
