Day cream

What applies to us applies equally to our skin: At night we have the opportunity to relax, but during the day we face many challenges, some of which can be stressful. Everyday challenges for the skin

We may not always be aware of it, but our skin has to withstand numerous influences every day. If the protective barrier is healthy, we think even less about it. The challenges, however, are diverse, and involve both external and internal factors. They await us simply by stepping outside the front door. The weather, with its diverse traits, is an important factor. Extremely high temperatures, but also freezing temperatures, can lead to skin dehydration. Another unfavorable factor is dry air from heating.

UV radiation accelerates the aging process and simultaneously generates free radicals that disrupt the skin's protective mechanisms. Polluted air also damages the skin. Fine dust and other particles increase oxidative stress and attack cells. This also applies to cigarette smoke – passive smokers are not immune. Estimates suggest that such external influences contribute about 80 percent to skin aging. The remaining 20 percent is due to internal factors. These include, for example, hormonal fluctuations, diet, lack of sleep, or stress.

Dry skin is a common problem. It lacks not only the necessary moisture but also sufficient sebum. As a result, it only partially fulfills its function as a protective barrier. Bacteria, viruses, and environmental toxins penetrate more easily. The surface is characterized by a brittle, dull appearance. It can also feel tight, cracked, and itchy. Redness and flaky patches may also occur. To prevent precisely these problems, a day cream is recommended.

Importance and function of a day cream

A clever marketing move by the cosmetics industry? At least, that's what it initially appears to be when two different creams are offered – one for night and one for day. This is deceptive, however, and the raison d'être of two products becomes clear upon closer examination of the skin's role throughout the day. Cell renewal is in full swing at night, occurring at up to eight times the rate during the day. When we're active and exposed to many influences, our skin is more likely to switch into protective mode. This can be specifically supported with a cream.

At the same time, it depends on the individual skin type and its needs. However, it is typical for many day creams that they contain various protective ingredients. This makes them more resistant to influences such as sunlight, air pollution, low or high temperatures, and harmful ingredients in certain foods. This is particularly important for dry skin – as is a boost of moisture. This keeps the protective layer fresh and nourished for the day. At the same time, depending on the ingredients, the cream can also promote a more awake appearance of the skin. Some products even offer UV protection. Especially for women who wear makeup, it is also important to know that a day cream forms the perfect base for it.

Protective and caring: requirements for a day cream

The optimal day cream is tailored to your skin type. Dry skin requires moisture and a replenishing effect. This would be counterproductive if blemishes occur. In the morning, most people have little time, so it's all the more pleasing when a day cream absorbs quickly. This is considered a typical feature that it should fulfill anyway. Alcohol-free products, which generally have mild properties, are ideal. These gentle properties are especially important for dry skin.

Dermaplan meets these requirements because its entire product range is free from harmful and allergenic ingredients. Fragrances and perfumes, emulsifiers, preservatives, silicones, dyes, mineral oils, and even polyethylene glycols (PEGs) are excluded. The day creams and all other Dermaplan products are also suitable for vegans, as they do not contain any animal-derived ingredients.

Soothing substances are needed to prevent moisture loss. In addition to glycerin, Dermaplan day creams contain olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil. They protect and smooth the skin simultaneously. Antioxidants are included, including vitamin E acetate. As a free radical scavenger, it counteracts oxidative stress caused by external factors. Components such as phytosterols have regenerating properties. They stabilize the bonds between skin cells and thus strengthen the skin's barrier function. Dermaplan day creams are also suitable for neurodermatitis and psoriasis. The differences between the products lie in the lipid content – the drier the skin, the higher the lipid content should be.

All DERMAPLAN day cream / day care products are available in our online shop and in your pharmacy.

FAQ Day cream

A difference like night and day: This can also be observed in our skin. While it switches to regeneration mode during sleep, it is more focused on protection during the day. Accordingly, it makes sense to use a skincare product that supports the barrier in its function. We answer typical questions about day creams in the following overview.

Why should I use a day cream?

Facial skin is exposed to a variety of influences throughout the day. Exhaust fumes, cold and dry air from heating in winter, and heat and UV radiation in summer – these are just a few examples. A day cream protects the skin from these by supplying it with vitamins and moisture. It prevents dryness and is the best basic care after cleansing your face. Depending on the product, it may also contain UV protection, but this is no substitute for sunscreen.

What is the difference between a day cream and a night cream?

A day cream is primarily designed to protect facial skin, while a night cream is primarily intended to promote regeneration processes during sleep. Differences can also be seen in the consistency. After applying a day cream, the skin doesn't shine because it contains a moderate amount of oils. Furthermore, the texture is light to medium. This is also important if you plan to apply makeup.

What characterizes a good day cream for dry skin?

A good day cream for dry skin provides it with moisture and lipids. The amount of lipids it should contain depends on two key criteria: the current season and the degree of dehydration. The colder it is and the more the skin lacks moisture, the greater its need for lipids. Since a dry skin is more sensitive to external stimuli, it should be composed of natural ingredients. Perfumes and fragrances, emulsifiers, preservatives, mineral oils, and other harmful or allergenic substances, however, should be evaluated with caution.

What should be considered when using a day cream?

Before applying a day cream, a thorough facial cleansing is necessary in the morning. This removes sweat, excess sebum, toxins, and dead skin cells from the skin. Afterward, the skin is ready to absorb a care product. It's important to choose the right one for your skin type. Those suffering from blemishes need a cream with antibacterial properties that may also have a soothing effect. Meanwhile, for dry skin, it's important that the product retains moisture and oils. Applying a thin layer of day cream is usually sufficient. This provides optimal care for the skin.
