As we age, our skin becomes more demanding and sensitive. It can no longer regenerate as quickly as we're used to. It's perfectly normal for elasticity and moisture to be lost as a result of the aging process. Our outer layer is often also only able to fulfill its protective function to a limited extent. It's impossible to say in general terms when we can speak of aging skin, as many individual factors play a role. One thing is certain, however: Mature skin requires regular and gentle care. Dermaplan has developed the right products for this in collaboration with dermatologists.
A perfect supportive skin care product for aging skin problems such as itching, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, or even sensitive and dry skin. Our aging skin care products are completely free of harmful and allergenic ingredients.

Why aging skin requires special attention
Skin aging is a process that many associate with later life. In fact, it begins much earlier – so early that most people might be surprised. From the age of 20, the regenerative capacity of skin cells begins to weaken. However, this only becomes noticeable much later. The first signs – if at all – are noticeable from the age of 30. By then, however, sebaceous gland production has already begun to decline. The epidermis becomes thinner and more sensitive. The connective tissue retains less moisture. As a result, elasticity decreases and the first wrinkles appear, particularly around the eyes and mouth.
Age spots and pigmentation changes often begin to appear around the age of 50. Around 60, wrinkles become more common, and the skin appears paler. For some people, this happens earlier, for others later. Genetic factors, personal lifestyle, and various environmental influences all influence this. Aging skin loses moisture and is therefore prone to flaking. Itching is also a typical side effect.
Wrinkles are caused, on the one hand, by reduced collagen production. Collagens are protein chains composed of various amino acids. They support the skin and, to a certain extent, plump it up. At the same time, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the second layer of skin, also known as the dermis, decreases with advancing age. Hyaluronic acid binds water and protects against moisture loss – the less there is, the more the skin dries out. It also becomes less flexible because the amount of elastin decreases. With the right care, these signs can be prevented or damage that has already occurred can be counteracted. Moisturizing components and compatible ingredients that do not irritate sensitive skin are important.
Soothing Dermaplan products for aging skin
Aging skin is generally more vulnerable and reacts more sensitively to external influences. Redness, itching, and inflammation occur more quickly than in younger years. When selecting skincare products, it is important to consider dermatological compatibility. Dermaplan eliminates allergenic and harmful ingredients from its entire range. Therefore, it contains no emulsifiers, preservatives, perfumes, fragrances, mineral oils, or similar ingredients. Animal-derived ingredients are also excluded, so even vegans can safely use Dermaplan skincare.
For cleansing aging skin, Tonic Sensitive Facial Toner is recommended. Since it contains no alcohol, it is extremely mild. The active ingredients urea, panthenol, and allantoin are characterized by their moisturizing properties. They also strengthen damaged skin areas and improve the appearance of redness. The feeling of tightness caused by dryness is noticeably reduced. Dermaplan Wash Balance is also intended for cleansing and can be used all over the body. This product does not foam, which is a clear indication of its skin compatibility. This indicates that it does not contain any emulsifiers, which would only burden the protective barrier.
You can effectively treat itchy, aging skin with Dermaplan Itch Permanent Care. It provides gentle treatment for chapped, dry skin and can also be used for psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. The Dermaplan Lipid Balance series includes creams with varying lipid contents. They offer the optimal solution for every season and tailored to the degree of dryness.
A holistic approach to skin care
Ultimately, the aging process of the skin cannot be stopped. However, with early care, it can be counteracted and the accompanying symptoms reduced. However, using specifically designed products is only one aspect. There are many parameters to consider – which is why we speak of skin care as something holistic. Nutrition, for example, also plays a role. Those who ensure an adequate intake of vitamins can more easily bind free radicals and counteract oxidative stress caused by harmful environmental factors.
The importance of drinking enough water cannot be emphasized enough, especially as the sense of thirst decreases with age. If the body is optimally hydrated, the skin is less likely to dry out. Seniors, in particular, should hopefully live a less stressful life or focus on relaxation—this is also important, as psychological stress has a negative impact on the skin. The same applies to toxins like nicotine, which should be avoided.

Age-related itching guide
As we age, people are often plagued by itching and scratching, especially at night, due to dry skin. This is usually caused by degenerative changes in the skin that lead to dryness (a lack of skin fatty acids) and itching. Frequent washing and bathing exacerbates age-related itching. Additional influences such as the environment, season, medications, and diet can exacerbate the condition of dry skin and thus the itching and scratching.
To prevent itching and scratching, the skin should be treated, even several times a day, initially with anti-inflammatory creams for itching, such as Dermaplan Itch Permanent Care, and subsequently with lipid-containing creams such as Dermaplan Lipid Balance to support the skin's natural oil production. Dermaplan offers three Dermaplan Itch Care and Dermaplan Lipid Balance products each, tailored to the respective skin type and condition, to combat itching and dry skin.
When using any skincare products, it's especially important to ensure they're free of cortisone, mineral oils, preservatives, perfumes, dyes, and silicones. Mineral oils and preservatives, in particular, can cause dry skin, itching, and even other skin irritations and skin cancer. Dermaplan therefore avoids these ingredients in all anti-itch and lipid balance products! See also the Dermaplan newsletter.
FAQ Aging skin
When you hear the term "aging skin," you probably think of twilight years—but the aging process begins much earlier. It may come as a surprise, but starting around the age of 20, skin cells begin to renew more slowly. This is completely normal. From around the age of 30, the productivity of the sebaceous and sweat glands declines. Since everyone has to deal with this topic sooner or later, it's likely to not only generate particular interest but also leave you with unanswered questions. That's why we have created our FAQ section, where we compile and answer the most frequently asked questions.
When can we talk about aging skin?
There's no general statement about when skin begins to show signs of aging. For some people, changes become visible earlier, for others later. This depends on many factors, such as genetic predisposition, lifestyle, and the amount of care provided. The fact is that from around the age of 30, the productivity of the sweat and sebaceous glands decreases. From around the age of 50, age spots and pigmentation can appear. The skin is more prone to wrinkles and becomes thinner overall.
What characteristics are typical of aging skin?
Due to the reduced productivity of the sebaceous and sweat glands, aging skin tends to dry out. This can make it more susceptible to external influences and can also cause itching. Generally, it is also typical for the surface to become rougher, lack elasticity, and appear slacker, paler, and duller. Aging skin is considered to have poorer blood circulation, and its wound healing process is delayed. Of course, wrinkle formation should not be left out of this list. Age spots and pigmentation spots also become more common.
How should aging skin be cared for?
Aging skin lacks moisture. A skincare product should provide precisely this moisture, thus counteracting any feelings of tightness or itching. Moisturizing properties are also welcome to maintain the barrier function for as long as possible and reduce inflammation if necessary. It's fundamentally important that a cream does not contain any harmful or allergenic ingredients – these would only unnecessarily irritate the sensitive skin surface.
What helps against itching in aging skin?
Itching is usually caused by dry skin. Accordingly, this problem is best counteracted with a cream that provides moisture and has lipid-replenishing properties. It should also be quickly absorbed and allow aging skin to breathe. This type of product strengthens the protective barrier and reduces itching. The cream may also contain soothing substances that further promote this effect. Irritants such as perfumes and fragrances, silicones, emulsifiers, or preservatives should be avoided. These could only further stress the damaged barrier.
