Irritated and resentful: characteristics of sensitive skin

The number of people affected by sensitive skin has increased in recent times. Estimates suggest that this problem affects approximately half of society – at least temporarily. In some cases, however, it can also be a chronic condition. There are many conceivable reasons why our protective barrier reacts sensitively. Interestingly, it is very difficult to formulate a universally valid, accurate definition of sensitive skin. This is primarily because the term "sensitive" is a highly subjective perception.

However, various characteristics make it clear whether and when sensitive skin is considered appropriate. Objectively recognizable symptoms include redness, flaking, cracks, or even swelling. It can affect any skin type – from dry to oily to combination skin. In general, the surface reacts more quickly to otherwise harmless influences – thus, its tolerance threshold lowers. Those affected perceive this through sensations such as tightness, tingling, burning, or itching.

But why does skin show its sensitive side? Typically, its natural protective barrier is out of balance. Specifically, this means it lacks oils and moisture. This makes it easier for harmful substances to penetrate the barrier. Irritations occur more quickly, and the skin doesn't immediately forgive certain mistakes. For example, those who use unsuitable cosmetics or overextend sun exposure can expect irritation that lasts longer.

Sensitive skin? This can have many causes

There are many reasons that can cause sensitive skin. One reason could be an allergic reaction that causes changes or even eczema. If this occurs, a doctor should be consulted to determine the root cause. This may occur due to contact with cleaning products or the use of the wrong cosmetics. As we age, the skin dries out because sebum production decreases – this is a completely natural process and also a possible cause of sensitive skin.

In general, there are various phases in life, such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, that bring about changes in the skin. These are linked to hormonal changes. A genetic predisposition can also lead to a more sensitive protective barrier. Psoriasis, better known as psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis, in particular, have hereditary causes. To find the reasons for sensitive skin, it is also important to look at your lifestyle. An unhealthy diet with too few fruits and vegetables, which leads to a lack of minerals and vitamins, is one example. Excessive stress can also cause sensitive skin. The same applies to too little sleep, which prevents the barrier from regenerating sufficiently.

Alcohol and nicotine consumption are strictly discouraged. Nicotine impairs metabolic processes in the body and inhibits blood circulation, while alcohol causes dilation of blood vessels. Even taking certain medications can affect the skin's appearance—especially in combination with UV radiation, this can have harmful consequences. Speaking of which: Excessive sunbathing is another possible cause of sensitive skin. Climatic conditions such as dry, heated air, cold, or extreme heat also pose challenges. Washing too often and intensively also ultimately attacks the skin, causing it to react more sensitively.

Cleanse and care for sensitive skin with Dermaplan

Especially when skin reacts very sensitively to various influences, it requires gentle treatment. Suitable products must be free of harmful ingredients. Dermaplan has developed its range for precisely this reason. It is completely free of perfumes and fragrances, mineral oils, silicones, emulsifiers, dyes, PEGs, preservatives, and animal ingredients. Thus, the skin benefits from soothing, nourishing, and regenerating properties.

When cleansing, it's important to remember that water alone removes moisture from the skin's protective barrier. To support this, Dermaplan Wash Balance is a mild liquid soap for the whole body. It doesn't foam, which is a clear indication that it doesn't contain emulsifiers. However, this doesn't detract from a thorough cleansing. On the contrary: It also replenishes lipids and supports the skin's recovery process. Dermaplan Tonic Sensitive can be used to specifically cleanse the face. The special alcohol-free formula and its antibacterial properties cleanse and soothe sensitive skin.

Because the protective barrier is compromised and lacks moisture and lipids, it needs a product after cleansing that precisely meets and supports these needs. Dermaplan's Lipid Balance meets this requirement. It is available in three versions. Level 1 has the lowest lipid content at 15 percent, while Level 3 has the highest at 45 percent. It should be tailored to current needs: the drier the skin, the greater its need for these fats. Dermaplan After Shave Balm is specifically designed for post-shave treatment; it moisturizes and protects against irritation. All products are quickly absorbed and only need to be applied thinly. They are also helpful in cases of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

All DERMAPLAN products for sensitive skin are available in our online shop and in your pharmacy.

FAQ Sensitive skin

It's not considered a clearly defined skin type, but it's a widespread phenomenon: Many people complain about sensitive skin, which is why there's a separate category for it in care and cleansing products. It's perfectly understandable that you might still have questions about this. We'll answer the most frequently asked questions for you in this section.

How do I recognize sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is difficult to define because it is a largely subjective sensation. One person may experience it more intensely, while another may be barely bothered by it. Nevertheless, there are some typical characteristics. Swelling, cracked skin, redness, or flaking are objective symptoms. Itching or burning, on the other hand, is a subjective sensation. Any skin type can be affected—from oily to dry to combination skin. The phenomenon occurs in women as well as men.

What can cause sensitive skin?

If skin appears sensitive, it usually means that its natural barrier function is impaired. Consequently, pathogens or environmental influences generally trigger a reaction more easily. The triggers are extremely diverse. From the use of unsuitable cosmetics to an unbalanced diet to chronic stress, there can be various causes. Mechanical or chemical irritations can also be added to this list. Contact with a cleaning or cleaning product is one example. Excessive sun exposure without UV protection is also considered a cause of sensitive skin.

How do I properly cleanse sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin requires careful cleansing. At the same time, washing shouldn't be done too frequently. Once in the morning and once in the evening is sufficient. Otherwise, there's a risk of further moisture being removed from the surface, causing it to dry out more and become even more vulnerable. A soap-free cleanser that doesn't contain perfume or fragrance is recommended. This allows the skin to be gently freed of dirt, excess sebum, and makeup. Moisturizing properties are also important for dry skin to help it regain its moisture and regain its resilience.

How should I care for sensitive skin?

Since sensitive skin is easily susceptible to various irritants, these should be excluded from a skincare product. Allergens or harmful ingredients would only further stress it. Accordingly, emulsifiers, fragrances and perfumes, preservatives, mineral oils, silicones, and the like should be avoided. A natural, dermatologically well-tolerated cream is the first choice. It supports the skin in rebuilding its protective barrier, moisturizes, and soothes irritation.
